Nice anniversary, 24 years to the day. We almost looked the same when we met at a chessboard again last March in NYC, no?!
Here Nathan Sharansky and I are at the March 7, 2018, NYC event honoring his life and retirement as head of Jewish Agency. I asked the great Ukrainian chess composer Eduard Eilazian for a problem in homage to Sharansky's own life. A trapped knight escapes to deliver mate!
I honestly don't know how I drew the game in the photo in 1994, and Nathan did beat me in our next simul game, in 1996. He is quite a strong player, not a courtesy draw at all!
Here is the beautiful Eilazian composition I dedicated to Sharansky. White to play and win. The trapped "Sharansky knight" on h1 has a heroic role, of course!

A few things to listen for tonight. 1) The words "crisis," "threat," "emergency," & "enemies" without evidence or on "secret" evidence. 2) Framing Trump's base as victims of these threats. 3) Blaming predecessors & opponents for not dealing with the threats, or for causing them.
4) Attacking media for not blindly repeating his narrative. Saying "the fake news will tell you.." 5) Blaming shutdown & "crisis" on others while positioning himself as the only one who can fix it. (If you enter a debate about solutions, you have accepted there is a crisis.)
Of course, these things would also be said if there were a real crisis! So how to determine the difference? 1) Why now, & not during 2 years of GOP control? Can't blame Dem obstruction. 2) Emergency powers are for emergencies. Does he make a real case for desperate measures?

Trump's foreign policy is almost the same Obama's but with a much worse PR department & with a critical press. It's saying "Go to Hell!" and hoping Hell doesn't reach you before you leave office.
I think Obama sincerely believed the US retreat would lead to peace. Many of us said he was wrong and he was. Trump is much worse because we know the results already. The slaughter & chaos are here, the thugs and dictators are advancing.
Trump's betrayals are for his interests alone. He aligns the US with authoritarians because it suits him. He spreads the virus of illiberalism, which is more contagious & deadly than right or left ideology.

That "does not include flight, hotels or food"? Yeah, that can slam each and every one of these up to four figures, even if the artist is frugal, if it's a road show.
Remember: "support" is tangible. If you love an artist and want them to keep producing work? Support them! Buy their prints, throw a buck in their ko-fi, shop at their store.
And if you're broke?

- Ask for their work as a holiday or birthday presents
- RT their commission solicitations, Kickstarter links and merch announcements
- Reblog/retweet their art on social media, don't just fave it.

Nice. I hear it a lot, mostly from white women telling me to be it. There are variations of course. Honey attracts more bees than vinegar. Saira, think about employing a different strategy. Stop being so divisive. You’re alienating people (by people, other nice white women).
At first, it was confusing. How was calling out white supremacy “not nice”? But I’ve come to understand it.

Nice is actually a four-lettered word and it means a variation of the following:

Shut Up.
Stay In Your Lane.
Stop Saying Things That Require Me to Self Reflect and Take Ownership of My Own White Supremacy.
Stop Making Me Feel Guilty.

Looking ahead for the war to end in Europe in 1945 (V-E Day), WWII correspondent Ernie Pyle had done a draft of a column; it was never published. It was found on his body after his death on Ie Shima on April 18, 1945. Here is what he wanted to let his readers know:
