@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 1/ Alright I'll try to make this simple. I'll do it in several tweets as an experiment to see if I can hit on the main points without writing an essay.
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 2/ First, the cars don't drive "autonomously with supervision", they lane follow with adaptive cruise. That's it, its all they do. A trivial job on a freeway (to which they should be whitelisted, and in fact in Taiwan, they are whitelisted) yet it isn't foolproof there.
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 3/ Secondly there are multiple hardware revs, clearly tesla have to keep upping the compute they feel is necessary. There is yet another in the wings. This will continue and will get more and more expensive without delivering FSD.
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 4/ Next, they use a cheap radar unit narrow field stereo forward vision and no stereo side + rear vision (only recently activated, on latest hardware only). This is insufficient for safe autonomy.
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 5/ With no designed driver attention camera (which I believe isn't just any old consumer cam, but is unique, to identify eye focus), they can't guarantee to regulators any level of driver supervision.
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 6/ They have no on-board storage space (witness: the dash cam needs a USB stick) so they aren't collecting the gigabytes of data per mile that Waymo etc uses to train its systems
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 7/ They don't have cm accurate mapping of roads, instead rely on vague GPS and plain old google maps. The cars on the move are using radar to identify possible moving objects, and vision to box them and guess what they may be. This is error-prone and inaccurate.
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 8/ There is almost no value to the data they've collected so far from the "millions of miles driven", and all they can do with the current stuff is slowly dribble new features such as the freeway lane change feature. Dangerous, as they're field testing things with random people.
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 9/ They're playing a game here where they try to stay one step ahead of commodity car features that are pretty safe and conservative, and the ragged edge, which can kill drivers or other road users like cyclists. But they've sold "FSD" already.
@fatropea @CathieDWood @skorusARK 10/ Unable to ever deliver coast to coast driving, driving in Boston in winter, summon across the country (all promised), using the current sensor array and hardware, Tesla will just keep kicking the can down the road until a new class action to recover $ paid for FSD. End.
