I started writing something about the Gender Recognition Act consultation tonight but couldn’t quite get it right. It’s such a minefield. Will try again tomorrow evening! I have in mind a fairly bland explainer but even that is v difficult
I have spent a few days reading the incredibly helpful and in some cases moving posts and tweets people have sent to me. I’m persuaded that the GRA needs to be changed and the requirement to show gender dysphoria is not working for many trans people.
I have always thought dignity is at the heart of human rights but increasingly I think human rights are also fundemtally about *listening* - so we can hear the truth of people’s experiences. The GRA isn’t working for trans people, it needs to change.
I also think the concerns of some about clarity around the Equality Act exceptions should be sensitively listened to too. I agree with @k21fem that issues can be ironed out without the sky falling in. The GRA 2004 was the revolution really, this change should be the evolution
I should admit that fear and anger around this topic makes it quite difficult to know how to engage particularly as someone with no direct personal stake. My general approach is to try and learn as much as possible and treat people respectfully. If I mess up, then sorry.
Anyway, that’s a taster. I’m not going to engage on the issue before I try again with something more substantial tomorrow evening as long as I don’t bottle it again.
