Learned yesterday of the passing of a great man. John D. Maguire. Professor, scholar, Univ. President, Freedom Rider, civil rights advocate & @NAACP_LDF Sr. board member. A truly lovely human being. May he Rest in Power.
For those of you who don’t know of John D Maguire, he was an exceptional man. His journey from son of the South (AL) to his awakening to the injustice of racism, his friendship w/Dr. King, his time as a Freedom Rider, & lifelong passion for justice, education & peace is powerful.
Much will be written about Dr. Maguire. Here’s a lovely piece. msw.usc.edu/mswusc-blog/jo… It contains a moving passage about his family’s transformation on race during the height of the Civil Rights Mvmt.
Dr. Maguire worked closely with Dr. King on writing King’s extraordinary anti-Vietnam War speech in 1967.
