Some initial thoughts on the @ICOnews report into data analytics and political campaigns (a short thread). Report is here: ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/…
1. Note that the action against Leave.EU is under PECR, so not pure DPA. Interesting decision given the data protection concerns reported re Eldon insurance and Leave.EU etc.
2. Glad to see that the ICO is calling for a Code of Practice, as we have done (see; consoc.org.uk/publications/d…). Any such Code needs to be carefully considered and should involve consultation with wider civil society.
3. Note that the findings against CA inc alarming wider DP practices (passwords on post-its!). Note that the data is still out there and who else had access to the FB datasets. Very concerning. ICO has also vindicated our legal arguments for @profcarroll, against CA's.
4. 11 warning letters sent to the main political parties, inc "demand" for data protection impact assessments. Those assessments will be crucial to the future shape of political campaiging. Action to be taken within 3 months. Will watch with interest.
5. Really important that the ICO is looking at the wider data broker industry. Note the action we are instructed on for @johnnyryan @mikarv @OpenRightsGroup and the overlap.
