The big prize #Amazon has gotten out of its #HQ2 stunt is not the PR value of a bunch of city leaders singing its praises, or even the billions of $ in subsidies that it will extort from public coffers.

It’s the data. 1/
Dozens of cities have shared reams of data with Amazon that their own citizens do not have access to. This includes intel on future infrastructure investments, land use patterns, planned policy changes, and so on. 2/
Amazon will use this data to build out its empire: To site stores, warehouses, etc. To get in early on the right real estate. To beat out competitors because it knows things they don’t. 3/
In other words, America’s city leaders are accomplices to a monopolist. 4/
This includes many political leaders who profess to be champions of equality and justice. 5/
This is not about 1 city or 2 cities. It’s about a corporation that’s extending its tentacles in every direction -- to extract wealth, insert itself, dominate. 7/7

Part of the “efficiency” that giant companies achieve comes from establishing systems that prevent managers from dealing with their staff as humans.
Amazon is a good example. This warehouse manager talks about how the company’s monitoring systems have automatic triggers for firing someone who’s inactive for a certain number of minutes. 2/ vox.com/the-goods/2018…
The manager might know that there are extenuating circumstances, but s/he has no discretion. “It was really difficult for me because the firings were automatic in the system in general, and I had no control over helping out associates.” 3/

1) This is the call sheet for the pilot of #Billions. Note the date we started: Jan 19, 2015.
2)Fifteen months before, I really thought my career might be over. Or radically smaller. Because in October of 2013 a (bad) movie we wrote bombed and we were fired from an HBO show we were hired to run.

1) There’s a lot of BS about @nntaleb’s Black Swan, antifragility & skin in da game. Let’s take the gloves off and get into trouble.
2) When the Swan flew out, it was immediately butchered by imbeciles not understanding that you can’t predict the unpredictable.

That is the point – and an IQ filter NNT himself proly did not expect.
3) In any complex domain – life! – the Blackest Swan is always skulking around the corner. You know it’s coming, but you don’t know what where when. You can't tame what you've never even conceived of.
