On this 100th anniversary of the World War I armistice, here's the story of Texas' most decorated serviceman from World War I, Marcelino Serna. 1/ thevintagenews.com/2018/01/21/mar…
Serna was an undocumented immigrant who spoke little English when he was sent to Europe. He was offered the chance to return home but declined, choosing to stay with his unit. 2/
Marcelino Serna became a U.S. citizen in 1924 and lived out his life in El Paso, dying in 1992. He is buried at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. 3/
In 2017, a new port of entry in Tornillo, east of El Paso, was named in Serna's honor. In 2018, as the Trump administration was took migrant children from their parents at the border, the government set up a tent city to house children at the Marcelino Serna Port of Entry. 4/
Even though the aggressive separation of families ended in June, the tent facililty at the Marcelino Serna Port of Entry has grown from 400 beds to 3,800, housing what the government calls "unaccompanied alien children." 5/
Taxpayers are paying tens of millions of dollars a month to house the children at the Marcelino Serna Port of Entry, largely because the Trump administration has made it more difficult to reunite the children with family members offering to sponsor them. 6/
About 1,500 children, mostly from Central America, are currently living in tents at the Marcelino Serna Port of Entry. 7/
Please excuse the grammatical error in No. 4. I was making an edit and didn't fully accomplish my mission.
