Today, @kategannon and I have the privilege of serving lunch to dozens of Central American migrants who are guests in El Paso this Christmas. Luis Sanchez, the owner of The King of Ice Cream, is making this a truly special day. Here’s the story. 1/
Kate and I volunteered a couple weeks ago to buy and serve Christmas lunch at one of the @AHouseElPaso hospitality centers for migrants, who are in El Paso for a couple days while awaiting transportation to join their families elsewhere in the US. 2/
Kate wanted to do something special, so we went to The King of Ice Cream, 9574 Dyer. Don’t let the name fool you. Oh, they have lots of paletas, but it’s one of El Paso’s few pupuserias. Luis and his cooks are from El Salvador. 3/
We had a great lunch at The King of Ice Cream. You should go sometime. While we were there, Kate told Luis we’d like to order pupusas and tamales for a special Christmas lunch for Central American migrants. Luis not only agreed but said he would do it for his cost. 4/
To keep his costs down, we agreed to do smaller pupusas and tamales. But when we came to pick them up last night, we learned that Luis’ cooks, also from El Salvador, were having none of that. So we’re serving full-size pupusas and tamales. 5/
BTW, these aren’t the traditional Mexican tamales wrapped in corn husks. These are the Central American variety, wrapped in banana leaves. They’re not on the menu. They’re a holiday treat. 6/
The King of Ice Cream threw in churros for dessert. He’s no longer doing this at cost; he’s losing money. And he is thrilled. 7/
So a few dozen Central American families — 2,000 miles from home, scared, uncertain, the target of vitriol from some people in the richest and most powerful country on Earth — will have a small taste of home at Christmas, thanks to The King of Ice Cream. 8/
If you live in the El Paso area, have lunch or dinner at The King of Ice Cream, 9574 Dyer. Luis is adding some new Salvadoran dishes to the menu. He’s only been open 2 months and could use the business. 9/
If you don’t live in the El Paso area, you now have another reason to visit. Stop by and see The King of Ice Cream when you come. In the meantime, consider donating to @AHouseElPaso, which is caring for thousands of migrants each week. 10/ annunciationhouse.org/financial-dona…
