So who were your favourite teachers in school?
I had a lot of great teachers, but the one who stands out for me was Joy Handsberry. She was a math teacher who was incredibly friendly and approachable, and taught both super advanced and remedial math courses. All her students loved her.
I had her for calculus my junior year in high school, and came back as her aide my senior year because she was so nice. I never liked math before taking her class, and then did and ended up double majoring in it, in college.
She was a teacher I kept in touch with, who kept inspiring students and always wanted to know what we were up to later on. Last year when she died of ovarian cancer, hundreds of students came to her memorial service to tell stories of her teaching.
She was an amazing person, but it also goes to show the incredible impact that a good teacher can have, making material come alive and inspiring students who might not work in that field, but will still have the knowledge and good memories of what they learned.
