Let’s rename the nutshell:

White evangelical christians are 53% intractably pro-authoritarian and comfortable-to-eager with every kind of bigotry, and the other 47% are either willing to enable it or leaving.
Bottom line: if you take Jesus seriously, the least appropriate place for you is probably any American christian church.
Oh man, that’s obviously true. So it’s FAR worse.
Honestly given my experience of the past three years I’m not in much mood to do the “not all Christians” thing, but for clarity my point was aimed at white American evangelical churches.

And you know what? I mistrust the instinct to disassociate, to make the first order of business distinguishing between THOSE Christians who have it wrong and US Christians who have it right.

I almost feel like that’s part of the problem.
Here’s an idea that’s just occurring to me: to be truly Christian, bear the burden of the crime even if you’re personally innocent of it.

Confess and repent collectively on behalf of those who won’t. They can’t escape that.

That to me sounds like a Jesus move.
Whether I have that right or not, the church is going to need to confront the sin of republicanism, and they’re going to need to confront it as a sin, or the church is going to die as anything that can meaningfully be understood as “the church.”

If it hasn’t already.
What white evangelical Christianity has proved is that if Jesus tried to come to America today, white American evangelical christians would vote to have him executed at the border by the U.S. army, by a margin of 53%.
