Six years after the Prophet (ﷺ) migrated from Makkah to Madina, he married Juwayriyah bint al Harith (R). Our Mother Juwayriyah (R) was a remarkable individual. She is described as a very impressive woman of great intelligence and thoughtfulness.
Juwayriyah (R) had a dignified and noble demeanor in the way that she carried herself and spoke to people. She served the Ummah as a teacher and a leader in her capacity as a Mother of the Believers.
Juwayriyah (R) is known to have been a teacher of many of the remarkable scholars of her generation and the next generation of the Tabi’oon. Abdullah ibn Abbas (R) and Mujahid, one of the greatest scholars from the Tabi’oon, both learned and narrated Hadith from Juwayriyah (R).
One of the remarkable Ahadith that is narrated by Juwayriyyah (R) is found in Sahih Muslim where she said: The Prophet (ﷺ) came to visit me early in the morning time while I was sitting making dhikr and engaged in the remembrance of Allah (SWT).
The Prophet (ﷺ) left to take care of some work and returned hours later, around noon. I was still sitting there engaged in dhikr, in tasbeeh - and he (ﷺ) asked, “Have you begin sitting here this entire time, for hours?” I said, “Yes.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said at that time, “Shall I not teach you a few words, that if you were to measure them against your hours of devotion, they would be equal?” Juwayriyah (R) asked him to teach her these words. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَدَدَ خَلْقِهِ
(SubhanAllahi ‘adada khalqihi)
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رِضَا نَفْسِهِ
(SubhanAllahi rida nafsihi)
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ زِنَةَ عَرْشِهِ
(SubhanAllahi zeenata arshihi)
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ مِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِهِ
(SubhanAllahi midaada kalimatihi)
3x each
We start with “SubhanAllah,” a proclamation of the magnificence, glory of Allah (SWT) - how absolutely perfect is Allah (SWT). We offer the praise and glorification of Allah (SWT) in accordance with the number of His creation.
We then offer the praise and glorification of Allah (SWT) that is befitting the beauty and majesty of His Throne. We then offer the praise and glorification of Allah (SWT) in a way that He is pleased with, so that He may be pleased with us.
We then offer the praise and glorification of Allah according to the number of blessings that He has showered upon His creation.
If we just reflect on the number of creations and blessings of Allah (SWT) - how many people have existed throughout time, how many different species of animals and plants, how many stars in the universe, how many leaves on how many trees, how many grains of sand in the deserts -
- how much water in all the oceans - and how many blessings we enjoy, those which we realize and those which we aren’t even aware of - we could never count them all subhanAllah.
Such powerful words that the Prophet (ﷺ) taught our Mother Juwayriyah (R) - and she taught them to all of us, alhamdulillah.
