Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R) was one of the most knowledgeable of the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ). Even the other Sahaba (R) called him المُعَلِّمُ, “Teacher.” He accepted Islam when he was 16 years old.
Abdur Rahman bin Awf (R) was one of the most skilled and successful businessmen among the Sahaba (R). He never hesitated to give his wealth for the sake of Allah (SWT). He accepted Islam when he was 17 years old.
Asma bint Abi Bakr (R) stood up to the tyrant of her community, Abu Jahl, when he came to her home looking for the Prophet (ﷺ) to assassinate him. Abu Jahl raised his hand, slapped her in face, knocked her down - and she didn’t even flinch.
Asma (R) stared Abu Jahl in the face, protected the Messenger (ﷺ), and protected her family. Asma (R) played a crucial role in the Prophet (ﷺ)’s migration to Madina. She accepted Islam when she was 17 years old.
Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (R) was an expert archer. When the Prophet (ﷺ) was under attack during the Battle of Uhud, Sa’d (R) stepped in front of him to protect him. He accepted Islam when he was 17 years old.
Mus’ab bin Umayr (R) was the intelligent, charismatic teacher who the Prophet (ﷺ) sent to Yathrib to teach the growing Muslim community. Yathrib would blossom into what we know as Madina, the beloved home of the Prophet (ﷺ). Mus’ab (R) accepted Islam when he was 18 years old.
We have so much respect and regard for the Sahaba, the noble Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) - may Allah (SWT) be pleased with all of them. We hear stories of their knowledge, dedication, bravery, struggle, sacrifice, and achievements - but where did it all start?
Many of the Sahaba (R) who would become the most notable leaders in our history, actually accepted Islam when they were very young.
Zayd bin Harithah (R) accepted Islam when he was 15 years old.

Khabbab bin al Aratt (R) when he was 16 years old.

Talha ibn Ubaidullah (R) when he was 17 years old.

Mu’adh bin Jabal (R) when he was 18 years old.

Abu Musa al Ashaari (R) when he was 19 years old.
SubhanAllah. The strategy, philosophy, and focus of the Prophet (ﷺ) was to empower young people. He brought them to the table. He cultivated their talent. He provided opportunities for their growth.
The Prophet (ﷺ) invested his time and energy into the development of young oeolle - and what was the outcome? Legends who left a profound impact on the world that is still felt today.
This weekend, Ustadh @AbdelRahmanM and I will be at the Roots Open House to discuss how Roots will serve the spiritual and social needs of our young people by bringing on board a full-time youth teacher and mentor inshaAllah.
I hope and pray that y’all can join us as we attempt to follow in the footsteps of our Prophet (ﷺ) and empower our future.
