@deray His dad, his whole parental world, beat him, told him to pack all his clothes in a trash bag, and drove him to the nearby police barracks. His dad hauled him inside and tried to leave him there, saying "I don't want no faggots living in my house."

@deray His brother, just 11 months younger, grew up with him in the same house, the same bedroom. Bro was a boy's boy who grew up big and tough, spent his teen years in & out of incarceration for selling & for assault. Not a bad kid, just too much testosterone.
@deray Bro is dead now. He was a victim of gun violence on Election Day last month. But he always accepted his brother, and was always ready to defend him physically when necessary. But his father? His last words to his son, at 15, were "don't call me dad."
@deray So now he's my son. And he's a tall, beautiful black man (19), a very talented actor and singer with a beautiful baritone you would never expect out of such a skinny kid. And I love him to death. Kevin, you are an influence and a role model for kids.
