1. The movement of people across borders is a constant in world history (though the rate and direction of movement has ebbed and flowed over time). This tweet, however, helped me see the urgent contemporary connection between current/future immigration policies & climate change.
2. Put most simply, the world can either strengthen & militarize borders to deal with coming climate migration (build walls), or they can engage in a collaborative process of rethinking how they want those borders to work, how porous they should be. The latter is very hard work.
3. The nation-state as an institution has in many ways been weakened recently, largely by the mechanisms of global capitalism, but I don't see many signs that nations will be disappearing any time soon. Thus, nations (possessing geographical borders) will continue to exist.

This is a really important point. As we glory in dunking on dumb old Grover, we must remember that he was probably *the most important and influential Republican operative* of the 1990s. He was a key agenda setter and "idea guy" for the GOP in the ages of Gingrich and W.
Grover's "billionaires are the new slaves" schtick is of course absurd...and it was also pretty much GOP dogma for much of my adult life. Grover is not speaking for some bizarro fringe element within the GOP, he basically ran the GOP in DC from behind the scenes for decades.

I mean seriously...if you click through the tweets it's like one of those Russian dolls, it unfolds like the layers of an onion...but an onion whose layers are made out of sadistic racism instead of, you know, onion stuff.

It's just amazing that anyone can have watched Paul Ryan over his career, especially over the last two years, and accept his self-image as someone who's just too idealistic and high-minded for today's politics.

This is a chart from the CBO score of AHCA, the House-passed bill to repeal-and-replace the ACA.
Yearly premiums for a 64-year-old making $26,500 a year would go from $1700 under ACA to *$16,100* for the same insurance.
This is basic math. If somebody is getting a subsidy accounting for ~90% of the cost, and that changes to a flat ~20% while regs protecting older people from price hikes are weakened, their premiums will skyrocket. Hard to cut >$1T from health care w/o pain.
Premiums for millions of people would have gone up, not down, if AHCA had passed. That presented a big political problem because GOP had been promising lower premiums. So a key solution: State waivers and the MacArthur Amendment.

We've seen two "Alt-Right" (if that's the right word) political candidacies over the past year: Paul Nehlen and Patrick Little. Both flamed out.

With Nehlen, a massive opportunity to actually win was squandered by idiotic messaging. Both suffered from the same flawed strategy.
Nehlen and Little were similar types—freshly red-pilled normies. They suffered from "the zeal of the convert" and couldn't keep a lid on their newfound knowledge. Their message was harsh and alienating. They were normies who scared normies, as strange as that might sound.
Nehlen and Little attracted massive followings among shitlords and they began playing to audience—in other words, preaching to the converted. The problem is, these people couldn't vote for Nehlen or Little.
