Lots of ppl making reading lists for the coming year right now. If you want some Jesuit reading, below are some of my favorite books and authors on all things Jesuit and Ignatian

(Also, this is by no means an exhaustive list, so feel free to add your own!)
Always start w/ the man himself: St. Ignatius and his autobiography. There’s various editions out there. I like the Ignatius Press version the best b/c it has helpful footnotes
Ignatius wrote a lot in his lifetime—in addition to his autobiography, he wrote the Spiritual Exercises, the Jesuit Constitutions, and a *mountain* of letters. The Classics of Western Spirituality vol. compiles his greatest hits, and is a solid intro to Ignatius and the Jesuits
James Brodrick is a fantastic Jesuit biographer, and anything by him is worth reading, esp his bios on Ignatius and Xavier. His style is engaging, and his footnotes are thorough (occasionally featuring *footnotes to the footnotes*)
(Speaking of Xavier, it’s not a book, but treat yourself to this documentary on St. Francis Xavier, narrated by Liam Neeson and directed by Catholic Twitter’s own @jzipple)
If you want to delve a little deeper into Ignatius himself, there are a number of collections of his letters out there, showing Ignatius give spiritual advice to various ppl, as well as give needed spiritual and practical guidance to Jesuits in the early days of the order
Karl Rahner gave a preached retreat to seminarians, who transcribed the talks and turned them into this, a great intro to the Spiritual Exercises w/ many solid insights. Don’t be scared: when Rahner is preaching, you can actually understand him
Joe Tetlow is a Jesuit of my province who is both brilliant and clear. Here, he lays out the basic concepts of Ignatian spirituality in a manner perfect for beginners and useful for anyone. Any book by Tetlow on Ignatian spirituality is 💯
A more intermediate book is the classic “The Jesuits: Their Spiritual Doctrine and Practice”, which gives a thorough overview of the distinctive elements of Jesuit spirituality
If you really want to know the Jesuits, know our saints. Tylenda’s “Jesuit Saints and Martyrs” is basically the SJ “Butler’s Lives”: page-long entries on every canonized Jesuit, and a solid overview to who we are at our best
No list of Jesuit saint bios would be complete w/o Evelyn Waugh’s Edmund Campion. Every page is absolutely fantastic. As both history and literature, this book wins at life
For a more modern life of a Jesuit whose cause for sainthood is still open, Walter Ciszek’s “He Leadeth Me.” With God In Russia gives a summary of what happened, while this book goes into more spiritual depth about his experiences, and is the book that Ciszek wanted to write
De Caussade’s Abandonment to Divine Providence is a classic Jesuit spiritual text. The book itself is relatively brief, and Ignatius Press’ edition has letters that help unpack the ideas a little more
Finally, in shameless self-interest, two books about my province: “Southern Jesuit Biographies” and “Grand Coteau: Holy Land of South Louisiana,” telling stories about remarkable men and a remarkable place in my province
