I see lots of discussion of drugs coming into the U.S. but little discussion of how it happens, so I pulled stats from CBP, which breaks it down by drug type & mode of seizure— Office of Field Ops (mostly ports of entry) vs. Border Patrol. Thread. (1/7)

👉cbp.gov/newsroom/stats…
In FY2017, 71677 pounds of cocaine were seized by Customs & Border Protection coming into the country. 62331 pounds (~87%) of cocaine were seized at ports of entry etc. while 9346 pounds (~13%) of cocaine were seized by Border Patrol. (2/7)
In FY2017, 4878 pounds of heroin were seized by Customs & Border Protection coming into the country. 3925 pounds (~80%) of heroin were seized at ports of entry etc. while 953 pounds (~20%) of heroin were seized by Border Patrol. (3/7)
In FY2017, 1222795 pounds of marijuana were seized by Customs & Border Protection coming into the country. 361564 pounds (~29%) of marijuana were seized at ports of entry etc. while 861231 pounds (~71%) of marijuana were seized by Border Patrol. (4/7)
In FY2017, 60897 pounds of methamphetamine were seized by Customs & Border Protection coming into the country. 50569 pounds (~83%) of methamphetamine were seized at ports of entry etc. while 10328 pounds (~17%) of methamphetamine were seized by Border Patrol. (5/7)
In FY 2017, 1377 pounds of fentanyl were seized by Customs & Border Protection coming into the country. 1196 pounds (~87%) of fentanyl were seized at ports of entry etc. while 181 pounds (~13%) of fentanyl were seized by Border Patrol. (6/7)
Plz note I used FY2017 b/c I think they’re the most recent up-to-date stats. Also note the ratio of drugs seized at ports of entry vs. by Border Patrol is not necessarily the same ratio we’re not stopping from crossing, but I think the #’s are a key part of the convo. Fin. (7/7)
