The #TrumpAddress to the nation was full of inaccuracies and was horrifically xenophobic. Here are some things I caught that were misleading and easily disproven.
Early on he began ranting about how drugs entering the U.S. is part of this crisis at the border and used that as a justification for the wall. Yet the vast majority of drugs coming into the U.S are hidden in legal shipments.
He also talked about the great numbers of apprehensions of criminal immigrants at the border, yet unauthorized border crossings are at record lows numbers and statistics show that most people crossing have no criminal history.
He cynically used children who come here seeking asylum across the border as political props and pretended to feign empathy for them, while his policies deny them their actual U.S. right to seek asylum and are placed in detention camps, a great number of them ran for profit.
There have been two children who died under the oversight of border patrol recently.
Trump feigned sympathy for immigrant women who suffer from violence while migrating, even though his administration created a hostile environment that prevents them from getting help.
The border wall doesn’t work. It won’t stop drugs that are mostly coming in legally, unauthorized border crossings are at a record low, and the counties along the southern border are among the safest in the country according to the Wilson Center.
The crisis at the border is bullshit and manufactured by Trump for one reason only, to distract from the real crisis of legitimacy, incompetence, and corruption within his administration.
