People are smarter and better than we give them credit for most of the time. Humans are smart! This study ended up really depressing a lot of fact-checkers and I always was convinced that there was some kind of issue with it. My optimism paid off!
And the obvious answer is, when social media's business model is dependent on "engagement" they're going to help along the spread of hoaxes and false stories that upset people so that they argue online. There's your engagement.

I am not, to be clear, happy that the scientists who did this research had to retract their paper. That was a lot of hard work! But I am very happy that my faith in humanity overall has paid off, just a bit.
