I've come to realize Steve King is being absolutely genuine when he says he is not a "White Nationalist" but an "American Nationalist" because to him that means he is fine with having SOME minorities, provided they remain subordinate and in service of "traditional white America."
This new generation of internet-bred psychopaths like Richard Spencer and his ilk are true genocidal Nazis. But that isn't Steve King, and calling him a Nazi misses an opportunity to identify the peculiar rot that is American racism.
King is part of an American tradition, best embodied by the Klu Klux Klan at its height, not the loose conglomeration of redneck meth-heads it is today. King is obsessed with foreigners and criminal minorities, all framed in a noble defense of American heritage and tradition.
But he is perfectly fine with having a culturally and economically servile minority population. And in his mind, this makes him not racist.
In King's America, there is no segregated seating for minorities. And there might be a few spots at some of the lower-to-mid range country clubs, within the bounds of reason and good taste, of course. But when King decries the murderous ideology of Richard Spencer, he means it.
Because America is the "I have black friends" of racist countries.
