Interesting @bbctbq debate on returning antiquities to their home. Many good points made, but amazed nobody drove home the clear distinction between objects made to be transportable and displayed like a painting and parts of a monument like the Parthenon marbles. @NickyAACampbell
That’s not to say there’s no case for returning important cultural artefacts anyway, but the debate “to whom do they belong”, is simply unsustainable when a country is refusing to return parts of a building with a definitive location. @NickyAACampbell
Some “expert” on it was saying: “Yes, but do those marbles belong to Greece? Is modern Greece the same as the ancient city state of Athens?” But that’s cynical sophistry. The point is they belong TO THE PARTHENON and that has an undeniable geographical location. @NickyAACampbell

If people don’t get that opposing a unilateral discriminatory penalty is not about the AMOUNT, their attachment to decency and principles is pretty flimsy. They might be the sort of people who lie in public, betray a friend for a scoop and resent the disabled. @IsabelOakeshott
I wonder if @isabeloakeshott would be quite so sanguine if a security guard rocked up to her at the cinema, ten minutes before the end of the film, and made her pay an additional tenner just for being English, because it was only a tenner and the film was good.
I wager not.

It’s an incredibly complex, totally unprecedented, constitutional law matter. Quick, let’s get the views of three stall holders in a market somewhere. FFS BBC, grow up.
I have nothing against stall holders, you understand. What I resent is the toxic @BBCNews attitude of treating them as the the only “authentic” voice of Britain. It’s absolute bollocks and insulting to EVERYONE involved.
I know hundreds of really switched on, well informed, working class folk, some of whom supported Leave and some Remain for valid intelligent reasons. Get some in the studio and interrogate their views, same as you would with anyone else. Stop reducing them to a voxpop stereotype.

Strip away noise. This is what happened: Commons gave gov’t 18 of 24 months to get deal; then 3 months to present it. Gov’t overreached and stole another month, leaving only 2. Commons refused to reward this bad faith by giving the gov’t a TWENTY-THIRD month for its blackmail.
Bercow didn’t do this and didn’t say this. Parliament did. The Speaker merely facilitated a democratic vote for the House to express its sovereign will. The bad faith is all on the gov’t side. #BercowWasRight
The real disgrace is that we have a PM and an executive (one that failed to even secure a majority at the last election, no less), so autocratic and with such profound contempt for the legislature, it has reduced the Commons to such creative solutions in order to be heard.

In a separate tweet, she further says "gatekeeping" moreso as "taking up most of the space". I don't think that's objectionable.

In how to get more class diversity in black cinema, I'm reminded of Tyler Perry's beginnings on the Chitlin Circuit.
I'm still conflicted on my opinion on Perry's body of work. But, guy really did build his empire from the ground.

I remember way back going to sold out shows in New Haven theaters to see his plays and Hollywood had no clue who he was.
Really great interview with Jafa and Hans Charles. Actually, sobering more than anything.

But, he says if a true black aesthetic is going to emerge in cinema we have to abandon the notion that Hollywood is going to help us.

Good points made here. I'll add that the Russian govt interfered to help the white supremacist win. Which is something we should care about. & that this white supremacist has already struck real damage to the social safety net. Which is something we should care about. And so on.
I *really* don't get the weird denialism w/in some factions of the American left about this. Russian interference harmed all of the causes you purport to care about.
I find the denialism logically baffling. However, I do have ideas about why it persists. . . .

1. OK, John, since you’ve asked this question, let me try to explain this issue.
2. In their application Vote Leave made it clear they weren’t seeking to set out future relationship with the EU, but instead their “sole purpose” was to campaign to leave the European Union and maximise voter participation and turnout.
3. The application also states that the campaign will represent smaller groups. That the full range of options arguing for a ‘Leave’ outcome deserve to be heard, and they have to be heard for a successful outcome.

That all their concerns are ‘legitimate’ and ‘equally valid’.
