Segregation never went away, it just became something else. Federal laws explicitly funneled POC into Section 8 and whites into FHA loans — and these laws weren't repealed until home prices rose to the point that generational poverty forced POC to stay where they are anyway.
There is a kernel of truth to conservatives who argue govt social programs have kept POC trapped in their neighborhoods and in poverty.

But the solution is not to end housing assistance. It's to ban the local zoning laws and HOA rules that dictate where that money goes.
And the reason there has been no national coversation about that is that conservatives — and many NIMBY liberals! — still want these laws in their neighborhoods.

Each generation keeps segregation. They just get more clever at hiding it behind layers of bureaucracy.
