I am not a teacher. Yet everyday I go into a classroom and I teach 3-6 yr olds how to put on their shoes, pull up a zipper and put on a snow suit. I teach them how to open their lunch box, clean up their juice spill and not put food in their ears/nose. I teach them their letters,
the sounds they make and how to put those sounds together to make words. I teach them how to write those words to tell a story or to tell someone important to them they love them. I teach them that numbers are quantities and that they go in
a particular order and how to add and subtract those numbers. I teach them about graphing when we vote on which story to read and measuring when we compare which Lego creation is biggest. I teach them to be proud of their work.

Glad to see Bloomberg @business covering our new paper on the impact of child care subsidy expansions -- very relevant to the policy debate happening as we speak! 1/n
bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
@business In paper, joint w/amazing team of #ECE #childcare researchers (@ChrisMHerbst @aaronsojourner @Erdal_Tekin_ @jonathanborows2 @Liz1515Liz @realMattWiswall), we model childcare subsidy policies closely resembling current proposals (BBB, Murray-Kaine) nber.org/papers/w30140 2/n Image
We look at many outcomes: ECE use by sector, family ECE expenses, moms' employment, ECE teacher wages, market prices & total costs. Impt to model equilibrium, rather than simple static framework (w/ no change in hrs or types of care), b/c behavioral responses are key here. 3/n

Report on #familychildcare supply is here!🎉 FCC educators face many barriers to entry & sustainability. The biggest? #ECE #policy challenges. But their strengths keep them going. Buckle up 🧵(1/n) bit.ly/3bj0gps

#solvechildcare #earlyedchat #childcare @JulietBromer
In this exploratory mixed method study, we asked 179 current/former regulated #familychildcare educators (FCCEs) across 4 states (CA, FL, MA, WI) about their experiences entering, staying in, and/or leaving the field, and we learned A LOT. (2/n)
ON LEAVING: 30 former FCCEs (small N, exploratory!) shared intersecting challenges w/ systems, economics, working conditions, & personal factors that contributed to their decisions to close their businesses (pre-COVID). Most mentioned at least 2/3 of the core challenges. (3/n)

“I am coming to you with this information in hopes that you may ask @StrangRobert if the daycares have been directed not to go public with the number of positive cases."

#PaidSickLeave #PandemicPay #ECE
The govt. could always make an exception to the age-based vaccination program, as it chose to do for police officers. (One of Strang's biggest flip-flops.)

These days, female ECEs are arguably at as much risk of contracting the virus as police officers. ottawa.ctvnews.ca/licensed-dayca…

1/10 Our #CRISPresearch team worked w/ @polisiupui to analyze the @uwci's Great Families 2020 initiative. #GF2020 uses a #2Gen approach to help parents/caregivers & their young children.

1/8 @SenToomey, @SenBobCasey Hello, my name is Antoinette Cooper. I work in an early childcare center, and the pandemic has changed my job.
2/8 The center I work at is heavily integrated with its community. In the past, many of the staff members became friends with the parents, now that capacity in the building is limited, the whole interaction has become less personal.
3/8 It’s much harder to foster a positive relationship and a sense of trust with people whom you barely see. To make matters worse, enrollment has dropped, further isolating this place from its neighbors, and decreasing the center’s revenue.

🧵 alert! How can educators support students and lay the groundwork for a more resilient system moving forward? Ahead of #naeycAC and in light of the current challenges in education today, we're proud to share this special collection from our partners at @ChildhoodEdIntl⬇️ #ECE
"One of the greatest challenges educators face is responding to urgent concerns caused by crisis affecting their students, while also creating the groundwork for a more sustainable and resilient system moving forward.
Teachers need creative ways to respond to disruption, students need emotional support to build resilience and perseverance, and schools need ideas for transformative approaches with the flexibility to respond effectively to future disruptions.

I’m a preschool teacher whose husband is immunosuppressed and a stage 4 cancer patient. I was ready to take a 3-month leave of absence from work to protect my husband from #seattlecoronavirus, until I saw his oncologist from SCCA, who is also married to a specialist in 1/x

@ehanford Maybe very little new research in reading research has come out since 80s that has fundementally shifted our understanding. Marketing documents from Amplify are not research. When you dig into citations, recycled, often just NRP. #ncte19 (quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com/s/2gKDNO)
Look how you frame the narraritive "teachers don't know this science" "" "teacher prep is bad" this is an agenda and not research and also not based in reality. Frankly I find it insulting #ncte19 (quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com/s/WkE1H)
@ehanford Folks love quantitative theoretical models. Looking at variance explained by different variables helps us understand reading. But to suggest Gough & Tunmer's model is superior leaves many question. So many better models with < error #ncte19 (quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com/s/A4S6D)

THREAD: Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that the US gov is legally responsible for the #MentalHealth trauma that Trump’s #FamilySeparation policy inflicted on thousands of migrant families at the US/Mexico border. nytimes.com/2019/11/06/us/… (1/9)
This groundbreaking ruling recognizes that the Trump Admin knowingly put families in danger & is obligated to provide a solution. #MentalHealth svcs are a step on the path to healing for kids & parents who were torn apart simply for seeking safety. #FamiliesBelongTogether (2/9)
It’s also critical that we don’t forget the millions of children--the vast majority of whom are US citizens--who are increasingly vulnerable to or have already been separated from their parents due to ICE enforcement in our own communities. #FamiliesBelongTogether #NoRaids (3/9)

Went to Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan today. Official population at 53,967, according to @UNHCR as of February 2018. All Syrian #refugees.

In many ways it was not what I expected.
First thing you notice is how remote the location is — some 100 kms east of Amman; 20 kms from Azraq town; 75 kms to Saudi Arabia; 255 kms to Iraq; and 90 kms to the Syrian border — from which its inhabitants fled.
At the same time, the harshness of the setting — a hardscrabble, sprawling 15 square km patch, scratched, etched and stretched out of endless rolling desert.

The perimeter was equally formidable, with security fencing, official patrols, check points and razor wire.
