THREAD - Federal workers are missing their paychecks. TSA and Coast Guard are working without pay. But there are impacts of the shutdown that are hurting Connecticut in ways you might not even realize.
Yesterday I visited @PCC_CT, an org that provides help for women facing domestic violence. Because of the shutdown, they may have to cut back on housing and support services for domestic violence survivors. ctnewsjunkie.com/archives/entry…
This morning I heard from ReNetX Bio, a company in New Haven developing a treatment aimed at reversing paralysis for patients with spinal cord injuries. But thanks to the shutdown they can't submit the new drug for FDA review.

All of these people in our state are hurting because the President is using them as bargaining chips in order to get his stupid wall. We need to reopen the government and we need to do it now.

Strong men around the world are befuddled. The full power of American foreign policy came crashing down today on a dictator in Venezuela, two months after the full power of American foreign policy rallied to the defense of a dictator who chopped up a political opponent.
U.S. foreign policy has always been a muddle of values-based and interests-based decisions. But Trump takes it to the extreme. No recent President has so enthusiastically embraced autocrats, making these occasional pro-democracy interventions so hard for the world to parse.
If Trump cared about consistency, he would make the realist case for intervention in Venezuela (getting rid of Maduro is good for the United States) rather than trying to pretend his Administration all of the sudden cares about toppling anti-democratic regimes.

Pompeo’s Cairo speech was la-la land fantasy. Here’s the terrible stuff we’ve done since Trump took office to destabilize the Middle East (it’s a long list so bear with me for a few tweets).

1. help kill thousands of civilians in Yemen
2. abandon Egyptian democracy movement...
3. sell out the Kurds in Syria without any plan for their safety
4. push Qatar into Iran’s orbit
5. weaken Lebanon by allowing Saudis to kidnap Prime Minister
6. empower Iranian hardliners by pulling out of nuclear agreement
7. let Saudis get away with chopping up a journalist under American protection
8. exacerbate regional refugee crisis by (a) cutting off funds for Palestinian refugee crisis, and (b) not letting any refugees enter America

It’s not complicated. If you can’t pass a background check, you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun. That’s why today, I’m introducing the Background Check Expansion Act to close the loopholes in our gun laws and save lives.
97% of Americans support universal background checks. The only place this bill is controversial is in the halls of Congress. If my colleagues need a reason to support it, here are 97 of them.
Esmerelda Padilla, was just 3 years old when she, her mother and a bystander were shot and wounded by Rufino Cervantez, a convicted felon who would not have been able to pass a background check.

Since the weather is my expertise I will focus there. am an elected official and life-long @GOP member and I support the border wall and improved border security 100%! There is a way to allow states to help those Federal Workers who are STILL ON THE JOB but not getting paid.(2)

If I was a federal employee, I would have minimal 4 months of bills in reserves. Period. It's call PLANNING.
Seeing how this happened 19 prior times since 1976, stands to reason yes?
Then, once I get my back pay, replace the depleted funds.
Don't expect me to get all upset for people that fail to plan for obvious potential issues.
Only excuse is a newer hire that didn't have the opportunity just yet to tuck away the funds.
Save the "but the contractors". These federal contracts are some freaking windfalls. VERY GENEROUS. Why do you think so many dream of landing a governments contact? They pay $500 for hammers!
They'll be just fine.
