With the recently matriculated at registration at @UWConline waiting for them to finish here in the Great Hall. Air-conditioned. Seated. I remember 1977 when we stood in a queue in a baking hot sun at an admin building. No shade. No water. No chairs. Nada.
After noon it was clear we were not gonna get done. Problems with the camera or printer of the student cards. An exercise in patience vs solar heated frustration. Registrar Daniels in his light grey suit & trademark smile came out & said something. Message was as short as he.
Some left to eat, while others kept places. I regretted sandwiches eaten at 10am already. Eventually they called it a day, in time for me and others to catch a 3pm Tramways bus to Athlone & Mowbray. We were in the queue the next day again.
Things went smoothly, and I made sure that I did not eat up all my sandwiches. Some student colleagues were sunburnt. We were mos not of the sunblock generation. (Sun burn gives a whole new meaning to Capetonian slang word sterkgevriet).
So I am enjoying this soft chair in an air-conditioned hall , waiting for the newly registered students to finish. They have water bottles with them and also put on sunblock, advised by a parent whose 1977 experience, he thinks, still holds true.🤐😇😈☠️
Blerrie fossil.
