/ Insight: Decentralization is a tool, not a goal. The true goal is reducing friction. Reliance on trusted central entities creates a lot of friction: compliance friction, accounting friction, legal friction, negotiation friction. Decentralization often reduces these frictions.
/ But decentralization introduces other types of friction: UX friction; adoption friction; InfoSec friction. To minimize friction, we must pragmatically use technological tools depending on the use case. Decentralization is only one such tool.
/ For more on the idea of decentralization as a tool for reducing friction (among other tools such as Zero Knowledge Proofs, SaaS, the legal system, and religion), all trying to increase collaboration and decrease friction, see my talk on CollabTech:
/ I learned this pattern of argument from @albertwenger who claims that "privacy is a strategy, not a value".
Or in my formulation: privacy is a tool for obtaining freedom from oppression. Other tools for avoiding oppression exist & are sometimes better
/ This insight came up in a conversation with @coinfund_al . (If it's brilliant it's to his credit, if it's dumb the fault is all mine :) ).
/6 Check out his fascinating project ADAPT adaptk.it developing a toolbox for pragmatic decentralization. A platform to program and deploy organizations, focusing on strong UX. Read the beautiful Background section of the intro paper here:
