Decentralization = Distribution of Power and Control

You can distribute your architecture across as many different layers and entities as you want, but if authority is concentrated in a single entity then the system is centralized.
People like to think of distribution of Power and Control as a continuous spectrum from "one entity has full control" to "power is spread equally through the system"

Realistically there are like 5 models:

* Dictator
* Oligarchy
* Federation
* Global Consensus
* Local Consensus
I am a big fan of Local Consensus / maximally decentralized systems. Systems where there is limited central infrastructure (e.g Ricochet, Briar, Cwtch). I think they are an under utilized model for developing applications with strong security models.
Blockchains are the only data structure that I believe achieves global consensus (in a decentralized manner)

Regular reminder: The telecom network is a giant tracking system and the number of people who can gain access to subscriber data is practically unlimited.

Source: this used to literally be my job.
I've been reminded of a few concepts recently and it's becoming very clear that I've forgotten more about the inner workings & implementation details of telecom protocol stacks than most people will ever know.
The vast majority of reporting on privacy issues in telecom systems painfully mischaracterize the technology & conflate different issues, despite that they generally understate the privacy problems.

The world makes little sense anymore because we live within systems that have become detached from the systems they exist in which themselves have become detached from the systems they exist in...somewhere in that stack of systems is the physical world we want to understand.
To further complicate, many of those systems have provided tangible material benefit to many (often at the expense of others). The systems are no less real than the physical world because they operate over the physical world.
Our current economic & political ridiculousness is, in part, a failure of neoliberalism, itself a detachment from classical "money" economics, which is itself a detachment from the resource-limited world we live in. All a gross simplification of history, circumstance and power.

There is something to be said about the idea that technology has evolved in such a way that corporate & government surveillance is easy, but personal quantification is difficult.
I would love to be able to pull down and analyze so much data about my digital (and in many cases physical) life and interactions but so much of it is locked inside various layers and arbitrarily restrictive formats.
Even something as trivial as "what did I read this week" becomes almost impossible to answer when factoring in web pages, books, academic pdfs, emails, word documents etc.

I mentioned Kirk Doran in a previous tweet, but would like to now bring him more generally to your attention. Kirk is an associate professor at Notre Dame's economics department. Since going to Notre Dame, he's had a really great run. www3.nd.edu/~kdoran/resear…
Kirk's work (with Borjas) has many elements that I finally really interesting. Broadly, it's a research agenda focus on the transmission of scientific knowledge. So in that sense, it's an unbelievably narrow focus on the labor markets of scientists. Why "unbelievably narrow"?
Because Kirk and Borjas are oftentimes working with publications themselves, from which they can get both the exact type of work the scientists do, but also their citations of one another. I had Kirk come out to Baylor ten years ago and was really wowed by what they were doing.

1. MAJOR breaking news here from NYT: They have a list of DOZENS of questions Mueller wants to ask Trump. I believe there is NO WAY Mueller leaks this unless his team knows they're NOT going to sit down with Trump. I believe that GJ subpoena is coming.
2. While there have been negotiations (and I believe those broke down months ago, contrary to reports), I do not believe Mueller was THIS specific with Trump's lawyers. I do believe the leak comes from Mueller's team.
3. I do NOT believe that Giuliani would have such detailed questions and I also do NOT believe WH lawyers would. More importantly, this GRAVELY undermines Trump's position publicly, so they have ZERO to gain from putting this out.

1/ Developing a basic understanding (and a sense of intuition) around how complex systems work may be the most important things I've learned in the last five years.
2/ Complex systems are any system with many different components that interact with each other. They are characterized by the phrase "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts."
3/ It sounds hyperbolic to say that complex systems are the most important thing I’ve learned, because we don’t immediately identify complex systems with anything particularly important.
