A few drug companies are hurting patients by using unfair practices to keep drug prices artificially high. Today I reintroduced my bipartisan #CREATES Act to remove these obstacles & end these unfair practices, helping patients & families, & saving taxpayers $3.9 billion.

Long before the #TrumpShutdown began, Donald Trump, as a candidate, and then as President, resorted to fear, cynicism and misinformation for personal and political gain.

With border crossings declining for years, and no true crisis to point to, the President has spun a manufactured crisis to justify his ineffective and costly border wall. Let’s fact check some of his outlandish claims --
#FALSE: Pres. Trump’s repeated claim that we have a crisis-level surge of illegal immigration at our southern border.
#FACT: At the end of 2017, arrests of people attempting to illegally enter the U.S. dropped to the lowest level since 1971. Between 2000 & 2018, border apprehensions fell sharply from roughly 1.6 m. in FY 2000 to approximately 400,000 in FY 2018 – that's a 75% drop.

1. When I was a boy, my parents would sometimes take my sister and me camping in the desert.

A lot of people think deserts are empty, but my parents taught us to see the wildlife all around us, including hawks, eagles, and tortoises.
2. After college, I moved to California to work on environmental campaigns. I helped save the state’s last, unprotected ancient redwood forest, and blocked a proposed radioactive waste repository set for the desert.

The "vast majority" overstates it big time, but @DanRiffle is speaking truth to power & the truth hurts. 1 reason why drug companies, Wall Street & corporations have such a stranglehold over Congress is because it's far too easy for top staff & MOC to get jobs on K Street. 1/11
I’ve worked on the Hill since ’97 and I have seen far too many staffers of both parties who have gone on to lobby for:

- Bank of America
- Goldman Sachs
- Pfizer
- PhRMA
- Disney
- Google

This is a big reason Congress rigs the rules for the rich & powerful. 2/11
I remember bumping into a former Hill staffer several years ago who became a lobbyist for Goldman Sachs. He told me his job was “to teach Lloyd Blankfein how to speak progressive.” He was obviously not very good at that particular job. 3/11

There are some smart proposals here on drug prices. I'm dubious about the political will to pony up the on-budget cash necessary to finance prizes, but by all means let's give it a shot. vox.com/the-big-idea/2…
One problem: prizes keyed to drug approval imply we'll spend a ton of taxpayer dollars on drugs that aren't better than existing alternatives and never get used. Is that kind of spending politically sustainable?
Another issue: the new generation of biologics (they're often approved as orphan drugs) are terrifically difficult to manufacture. To the extent that production costs become a bar to competitive entry, a prize system won't alleviate the monopoly problem.
