1/ I love book lists. But I also find myself reading a ton of children’s books to my 4 yr old daughter and never see book lists for that. So I am starting one here.

1/ I struggle with the conventional wisdom of picking venture companies because of the CEO. I am sure I’ll get roasted by someone that I don’t care about on Twitter for this TweetFury but……ok.
2/ First let’s define what I’m talking about. Consumer co's with $1m-20m in rev. They have rev, products they sell to roughly X00,000 consumers every yr. Data to look at. I’m not applying this logic to tech early stage vc where there is little more than a few slides or rough demo
3/ Traditional consumer thinking is that to be a good investor you have to evaluate the CEO/team effectively in this space. I’m not sure I buy that.

Let’s be clear, I’m not saying the CEO doesn’t matter. I think the team does matter.

2/ I’ve talked about what I call the “3G effect” for years (publicly and privately).

Public consumer companies cutting costs to deliver short-term profitability at the expense (IMO) of long-term shareholder value.

3/ Annie & Vipal from the @WSJ rightfully identified that ZBB has been around for decades. I call what’s happening the 3G Effect because I believe that 3G’s initial financial success w/ ZBB struck great fear in the hearts & minds of other public consumer companies.

2/ Story in “measured” channels is super ugly. Large CPG and large retailers (the “measured”) are terrified.
3/ Pricing up and volume down (Exh 1). Think about that. The only reason total sales were up is because companies raised pricing. Huh.....Population is still growing right??

Today is #AshWednesday, start of Lent - Catholicism's holy period. Exactly 20 yrs ago I went to church with my Dad, beginning Lent on a somber note. Our priest died the Sunday before, as he prepared the chapel for Mass. I was 9 years old, and the only one there when it happened.
Fr Frank was a dear family friend. The chapel was walking distance from our house. We had him over to dinner, we often visited whilst walking by.

It occurred to me one day to ask who set out the missals on the chairs before mass.
When he explained he prepared stuff for Mass himself, I said I would come to Mass early next week to help him with the books. So I did.

Fr Frank showed me what to do and we chatted for a bit once chores were done. He was looking out of the window quietly, then suddenly collapsed

1. The Asshole Survival Guide. @work_matters's sequel to his blockbuster bestseller, "The No Asshole Rule". A depressing read when you realize how toxic some workplaces can be.
2."Black Money and Tax Havens", by Prof @rvaidya2000 - a short, breezy window into the world of black money. Again, a somewhat depressing read when you realize how weak the intent and how inconsequential the efforts into rooting out black money have been.

I learned to speak in public because I had to memorize 'Sorry' from "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide /When The Rainbiw Is Enuf" by #NtozakeShange for a 100 level theater class. 7 black people seated on a small stage as Laurie Carlos recites a monologue from Ntozake Shange's
I was petrified. I am still introverted but back then I was also shy.

And I was struggling to remember my lines and look at the audience. That turned it into a brand recitation.
The day of the performance, when it got to

loud
& i wont be sorry for none of it" I lost my place, after really getting into it.

Here is the thing about Twitter @jack,

I ventured onto Twitter in 2008 with zero connections to the political world. I was just a new voice in a sea of voices.

I made friends, engaged with accomplished people in my chosen fields of interest and earned interest in return.
I found my voice and became inspired to write.

I was published on websites I frequently visted and my work was shared on Twitter by people I respected. People I only knew from books and TV followed me and we engaged in interesting discussion.

I talked to real people.
My work was recognized and I was verified. I earned the trust and respect of my peers in my field, wrote and published several books, did interviews with my favorite people, became a professional writer ...

All because of the platform Twitter offered.
