1. As we enter into a phase of American politics where we'll be talking more about economic fairness, it's important to recognize that this is a conversation with very deep roots in American history, stretching back to the founding era. There's nothing "un-American" about it.

1. A theory as to why Northam's white friends in med school called him "C**nman." It was because he, unlike most of them, had actually gone to school with black people. White classmates registered their uncomfortability with that by "teasing" him for being "down with the folk."
2. At first glance this might make look Northam look good. In segregated Virginia he was like "yeah, I went to a desegregated school and you didn't." But no, this is not good. Because when his racist classmates called him "C**nman," he didn't shut them down, he played along.
3. He adopted the racist nickname as his own (as evidenced by its appearance in the yearbook), simultaneously capitalizing on the authentic "cred" his inter-racial schooling supposedly gave him, while also being complicit with the racism of his classmates.

Imagine if conservatives harbored 1/100th of the malevolent, misogynistic, homophobic, racist thoughts and instincts Democrats and media assume. Now consider how much of their reporting and commentary relies exclusively on those assumptions.
The caricature conservative the press imagines is a seething, racist white guy who spends his days just barely concealing his true inner misogynist and homophobe. Sort of like a functioning alcoholic. He harbors this secret vice, which occasionally bursts forth in a bender.
The notion that it's just below the surface is the license Dems and media commentators take to fuel and justify their assumptions. Sure, those conservatives aren't saying those things out loud, but we know they're thinking them, right? They're just holding back.

I'm glad our local GOP officials are denouncing the thwarted pipe bomb attacks. It's better than not saying anything. But that doesn't make it good enough.
Think for a minute about the campaign commercials, ads, and mailers we've seen come from the GOP this fall.

There is a consistent theme: Fear and Rejection of Other, Different People.
Sometimes they want you to be afraid of Swarthmore. Sometimes it's Philly. Their messaging is constant: there is a threat from the outside that must be driven out.

The GOP does this because it's effective. It produces an emotional reaction that shuts down other thought.
