I presume that #Northam will eventually resign. My focus remains on the Russian attack on US. How did this not get exposed during the election? I conclude at a minimum GOP opo researchers knew and held it. IMO they were likely working with the Kremlin. Like most Koch-funded GOP.

1/ Just to give you a sense of how little #Northam really appreciates the gravity of blackface, consider his resistance to resigning even though he literally owes his victory to black Virginians. So, here's the thought experiment...
2/ Imagine he had been pictured in his yearbook or at some other point not in blackface or Klan robes but wearing sidecurls, tzitzit, a kippah and a nose prosthetic (in a grotesque caricature of Jews). In such a situation there is NO chance he wouldn't have resigned by now...
3/ And this is true, even though the Jewish vote would NOT have been a key to his victory. But here the black vote WAS and he still resists. Which suggests he doesn't really think blackface is that bad, and that he doesn't truly value black Virginians as he claims...
I’m not advising #Northam on how to handle this situation but in general White Southern men on the left need to speak candidly about the culture of White supremacy and Confederate glorification that pervades the landscape from which they came. For example:
I mean let’s just keep it real, a White Southern man *not* engaging in KKK impersonation, blackface and/or Confederate fanaticism at some point across his lifespan renders him anomalous amongst his peers/in his community. Hell, in many circles these are fucking rights of passage.
Just be honest and admit that this is what passes for heritage and pride for millions of White Southerners to this very day and that it’s even been exported to the rest of the country on the wing’s of the GOP’s Southern Strategy. The issue is the assimilation of White supremacy.
It’s shocking but not surprising to see racist conduct, esp 35yrs ago. We’re a racist society. We all internalize it. At least #Northam’s sorry & owned it. Let’s not lose focus on the unapologetic racists in the White House/GOP pushing racist policies causing POC harm every day.
I don’t want to make excuses for Northam’s appalling & offensive racist conduct. I do want to acknowledge those who recognize their racism & fight against it are not the same as those who don’t give a damn and embrace it. The 1st are allies in the bigger struggle against the 2nd.
FWIW My view is also informed by a “kompromat” perspective. The big picture in America today is that Russia & others hostile provoke us to turn on one another, try to divide us, with a compromising pic. We’re all vulnerable in some way. We can’t let kompromat be the new norm.
