Fair question. The trends @JillAbramson cites are the opposite of public media. Public media added staff as others slashed. Local @npr stations hired more reporters as local papers declined. And built record audiences, closely covering the news without chasing every single tweet.
In fairness, public media execs worry of the risks as the media further evolve. And frankly, when a local station adds 10 reporters it is awesome but can’t fully replace the local paper that fired 400. Public media still need more resources (and healthy competitors!) However....
... In the past decade public media have invested substantially in stronger journalism. And have been leaders in podcasts, news apps, radio news magazines and other means of delivering serious, lengthy, sustained examinations of our world.
