Today is the day that Frederick Douglass celebrated his birthday. He didn't know his actual birthday, but on one of the few times he was able to spend time with his mother as a child, she called him her "valentine."
He took that as a possible clue—one of the few he had. So he made February 14 his birthday.
Frederick Douglass's history was stolen from him, so he built his own. Starting with his birthday.

One thing about this cover and article—it portrays its subject as representative of his age, race, and gender. He isn't.
Most white male teenagers in the US aren't ideological right wingers. Exploring how those who aren't engage with issues of race and gender in their daily lives would be more illuminating than this piece.
"I can't relate to my progressive peers because I'm a white man" and "I can't relate to my progressive peers because I'm an anti-choice Trump supporter" aren't the same thing. It does nobody any good to pretend otherwise.

Why does Trump call President Xi of China his “friend” and speak positively of Putin but at the same time has heavy sanctions on these countries?
China, Russia & some other nations are indeed pragmatic and they see that in Trump as well. But from GHWB with his “thousand points of light” until Trump took office (especially the Hussein years), these nations had been receiving a mixed message!
The predecessors of Trump have been essentially telling other nations, rogue & otherwise, “Globalism can work but America is too big, too great, we are going to have to reduce her to size. Will you help us?”

I’m gonna write a thread about the exploration of Obama’s blackness, in 2008, how divisive it was and how we in media can avoid perpetuating the falsehoods of blackness in our coverage. We really need to have a healthy dialogue about it.
The reality is that race matters in politics. In fact, it’s the number one element in everything that makes this nation function. When Obama entered the national stage, it really wasn’t white people who questioned his blackness. It was black people. And it was harsh.
When Obama announced his run for president in 2007, Tavis Smiley and other black people who were considered kingmakers were offended he didn’t announce at Tavis’s “State of the Black Union.”

A thread:

Tonight my husband went out to a craft beer event. I dropped him off and he took an Uber home. I realize how millenial those first two sentences sound, but he's a small-town Gen X-er who started drinking craft beer before most millennials were legal age. Anyway...
His driver picked him up and my husband made the usual driver-passenger small talk, asking him if he enjoyed being an Uber driver.

"No," was his swift reply.

Awkward, but honest. My husband probed further.
Beyond the usual drunk pukers who swear their fine, then vomit all over the window and door, he recounted the numerous times he's driven inebriated individuals home who have requested "a favour" and demanded to be taken through drice-thrus for food or to a store for smokes.
