I have not played this game but I am deeply concerned about it. Turning the displacement and deaths of millions of hemispheric denizens into a “game” that should be “enjoyed” is disturbing enough. THREAD 1/
But worse is that Native Americans are not present at all. What does that teach those who play this game? It is yet another form of erasure of indigenous peoples. That’s scary. 2/
Further, as @kristalynmarie pointed out to me, those who were present were the "corrupted/withered." The context is all there: the savage, the subhuman. Shades of Lost Tribes nonsense. 3/
We have to wonder what effect this will have on the children and adults who play this game. Because if we understand that games have the ability to teach, then they can also mislead. 4/
I don't know what was in the mind of the developers: they're either actively eliminating Native American peoples because it is convenient for their story or they are ignorant enough to make a mistake like this. Maybe both. 5/
Either of these scenarios is scary because the result remains the same: indigenous people are erased from their homes and the global narrative. 6/
Perhaps more frightening than a single game being made that actively eliminates native peoples from their own world is the society which can justify its development. 7/
