Three times we’ve saved up, handed stupid money to the Home Office for a visa. And for a lawyer, cos one mistake and they’ll fail you.

We had to book our wedding without knowing if my partner would be permitted the visa to attend. To show proof of intent.
The stress of whether that visa would come in time (you can’t call to chase up) was insane.

And once she had permission to come over, marry me? We had to do it again. This time for the right to remain here. And then again 30 months later. And soon, again, 30 months after that.
Photographs (INCLUDE OTHER PEOPLE). Bank statements (ORIGINAL: NOT COPIES). Text messages. Emails. Proof of web searches for wedding stuff. Job histories from companies long since shut down in another country. On and on.
And ye gods, the day itself, where you sit in uncomfortable chairs, shuffled from space to space at the Home Office, no idea how it’s going, your folder clutched in your hand.

All around there are families. Kids are crying, grandparents are exhausted. All stressed to the eyes.
Everyone there is worried about the same thing: What if they don’t believe me? People on the edge of their minimum income requirement worried they’ll look 50 quid under.

Have you tried to prove love? Try being introverted and finding photos of you as a couple with other people.
It’s hard to spend a day in that place. The plastic seats creak with the weight of the stress.

Because everyone knows some of the people scrutinising them are thinking this: Wouldn’t it be hilarious if we caught you out.

How powerful to wreck a lives. How fucking funny.
My mistake - It’s not deleted, it’s just old. The image not loading threw me.

It’s still there, and so is the attitude.
