My Parisian students told me that one reason I can't find French anti-smoking policies is that they do not perceive it as a public problem. I can't even breathe on the streets when these heathens walk around dumping their smoke. They think they look so chic walking around smoking
This drove me bonkers. How can a country or an entire population NOT perceive smoking as a public health issue (and therefore as a public issue). Jesus, people. Air is unbreathable here. And people are careless about the negative externalities they impose on others.
Second-hand smoking is harmful. You are welcome to your choices if you choose to smoke, but for the love of God, don't impose your smoke on me. And even worse, they smoke INSIDE METRO STATIONS which is, by the way, PROHIBITED.

As many of you know, I study water and sanitation insecurity. I came to this work because I’ve always been interested in work that narrows the gap between the rich and the poor, work that protects marginalized and vulnerable communities. I’ve worked on water/energy poverty.
I would need to link you to all the amazing work that researchers of @hwise_rcn (Household Water Insecurity Experiences Research Coordination Network) are doing to catch you up, but just one element that came to my mind this week and that has larger implications for academia...
This past month I've been in extreme pain which has proven hard to manage. But I've also had to work. There is no way around it, no way to take time off. Why do I connect my health to the water and sanitation insecurity literature? Because there's a strong connection.

I used to scoff about left brain dominant vs right brain dominant—even as a writer/ photographer who struggled with math and science in school. I thought it was a matter of liking English more than Algebra.

Then I sustained a severe TBI in 2013.

That was their word— severe.
A lot of things changed—some were immediately obvious once I was released from the hospital.

Some didn’t manifest until I drove from Los Angeles to NYC a few month later [alone, no less] to start a new gig at the United Nations.

Lost in NYC was a near daily occurrence.
Aphasia was constant—I just didn’t know what it was called.

Losing words made me so angry I kicked in the side panel of my truck.

The severed olfactory nerve served me well when I was lost in the subway stations—I couldn’t smell anything.

THREAD: "CZ is a Masterbotter" 1) Take a look at this chart: all crypto is sinking and yet BNB Binance price seems to be levitating. I will explain how CZ uses Tether to prop his coin.
2) Most major exchanges are trading against their users. MtGox had WillyBot, Bitfinex has an army of bots, Arthur Hayes is enriching himself at BitMex, and Coindesk skims 20% from their own users.
3) But all of these bots use LAZY PROGRAMMING. They run on LAN or same server, and place orders directly in the trade engine. A dead giveaway is when bot are trading without interruption even when site is under D-DoS attacks.
