You've probably heard about how Opportunity's last words to NASA were “my battery is low and it's getting dark.”

What you may not have heard is NASA's last words TO Opportunity: as a final transmission to the rover, they played Billie Holiday's "I'll Be Seeing You."

As we all know by now, the super-cool rover Opportunity is now dead. That's really sad, & I'd like to take a moment and see what this little gal (dunno why, but somehow I'm sure it's a she) has actually done for humanity. Because it's done a lot.
So here goes. Officially called MER-1 but known as Opportunity, or Oppy, it was sent to the Red Planet 15 years ago - launched on 8 July 2003 & landed on Mars on 25 January 2004.

When Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars in 2004, Tim McGraw was crooning:

“Someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying
Like tomorrow was a gift

A soft, tinny music filled the suddenly silent space by the display. It was awkward, almost hesitant, as if it wasn't quite sure it was meant to be music at all. And yet, the crowd stared, straining for the notes, silent and still until silence again filled the hall.

Spirit and Opportunity, the @MarsRovers of our hearts, were with me since they launched in 2003. They kickstarted my fascination with space, and by proxy with science and engineering.
When I was 11 or 12 I would spend hours poring over sheets of graph paper or Google SketchUp drawings where I carefully designed and rendered my own Mars rover. I even built a mock-up robotic arm out of scrap wood, tin flashing, and wingnuts.

Sad news. Mars rover #Opportunity is probably done. Sometime tonight, a team @NASAJPL will make their final attempt to contact #Oppy. If they can't, they'll likely call the mission. Here's what happened... 1/
She was bouncing along, doing well, until a massive dust storm engulfed all of Mars in June 2018, knocking out communications with the team on earth. They haven’t heard from her since. It’s unclear exactly what happened... 2/
The last message they received was basically, “My battery is low and it’s getting dark.” They hoped that the windy season would clear dust off the solar panels (if that was the problem). Since then they've been pinging her again and again, every way they knew… 3/
