I genuinely think that, from the comfort of the 21st century, humanity has forgotten how sick and miserable our species used to be. How much of our considerably-shorter lives we spent literally ill, or recovering from it, or living in fear of it, or with the consequences of it.
Imagine a world where, if an illness came to town, you FLED. As in, packed bags, got in a coach or on a horse, and RAN. Because you didn't want to die.

Or living your entire life in fear of being hideously disfigured by an infection. Syphilis or Smallpox, maybe.
It's theorized as many as 60 PERCENT of working-class and poor Victorian Londoners had a VD. As in, MORE THAN HALF.

And we understand on a basic level that mothers lost half their children to disease, but seriously. Think about it. Watching half your kids die, being normal.
Infections used to be what killed us, more than anything. And now we live in a world where people are so detached from the horrors they've wrought against humanity for thousands of years that they refuse to protect their children from them.
