We have GOT to stop downplaying De La Soul. Tribe gets the reverence. OutKast has the popularity. The Roots are an institution. But De La? They’re standard-bearers. Dropped one of the most creative and influential debuts of all fucking time. ANY genre, bruh. ANY.
These dudes let you know out the gate--WE ARE ON SOME OTHER SHIT. Prince Paul is one of the most outside-the-box creative producers we've ever seen and 3 Feet High set the table for whateer you consider "nerd rap" or "alt rap." I bought it five times.

The sampling is crazy and unapologetically nerdy. Pos, Trugoy and Maseo gave you an album that reimagined mainstream rap's parameters and--with all due respect to the Jungle Bros (and Ultramags), 3 Feet High made it cool as fuck to be a rap oddball.

Dana Owens was born in Newark, NJ to policeman Lancelot and schoolteacher Rita Owens. Her family was very close-knit and she was raised with music ever-present in her home. Her parents encouraged her extroverted tendencies while trying to discipline her rambunctious tendencies.
Her mother introduced her to art and culture, and Dana was very close to her older brother, Lancelot, Jr. Always creative, when Dana was eight, she searched through a book of Muslim names and happened upon “Latifah.” The Arabic name meant “delicate” and “kind.”
Dana’s stable family life was shaken when her parents divorced when she was ten. Her father was still close by and a prominent part of his kids’ lives, but Rita moved Lance and Dana into housing projects on the other side of Newark.

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

Boomerang lists them alphabetically not chronologically so Chuck Jones masterpieces sit side-by-side with 1960s atrocities (& later 'revival' attempts.)
