It turns out that there was a plan all along for Brexit! It was published by Douglas Carswell and Daniel Hannan in 2008. (1/x)
The cover promises that it can all be taken care of in 12 months. (2/x)
They pose a reasonable question: we should first ask what kind of Britain we want. (3/x)
They propose a list of things they claim are incompatible with EU membership, but none of them are. You’ll note they’re keen on “pluralism in healthcare” - we’re a long way from “Vote Leave to save the NHS”. (4/x)
They claim that being in the EU has corrupted Britain’s foreign policy away from its traditional posture of being “a friend to national liberation movements”. Empire 2.0 anyone? (5/x)
The most bizarre claim in the book comes at the end of a long discussion of why Americans and Europeans see Israel differently. (6/x)
Break clauses make an appearance too. Apparently Parliament should have annual votes on whether to remain part of organisations like the UN, WTO and NATO. (7/x)
By now you must be wondering about the Brexit plan... Well, guess what? (8/x)
We can leave the EU and stay in the single market with the full four freedoms! (9/x)
What about complaints about being a vassal state? Well, “it is a problem in theory rather than in practice”. (10/x)
And they are confident Britain can do better than Norway, so we should treat it as a baseline. (11/x)
Tantalisingly they even imply a kind of special status within the EU would be a good idea. (12/x)
But there’s more: they propose that for controversial legislation, citizens should have the option of triggering a veto referendum to block it. (13/x)
And they believe the Attorney General should have the power to trigger a referendum for changes “pushed through without a mandate”. (14/x)
So, @peoplesvote_uk - it sounds like you have a couple of strong supporters! (15/15)
