A good rundown on the Gallup student poll research showing the importance of faculty mentoring, but the headline hits me funny. I think most faculty are aware of the ways they matter. insidehighered.com/views/2019/02/…
The barriers to better faculty mentoring are far more likely to be systemic than individual. As contingent faculty I could not effectively mentor students because I was never going to teach an upper-division course where I might see them a second time.
Or, adjunct faculty may simply not be around in future semester to be a mentor. Even now, when I haven't been teaching, students reach out to me and I try to help, but I can't do things like write recommendations because I lack status and institutional affiliation.

The human cost is tremendous, and so is the economic cost. Depriving more Americans every year of a living wage or increase in their wages is putting great strain on the economy in many areas.
Yes, wealthier folks are also seeing an increase in anxiety and depression, but this is why I believe it's a combination of "scarcity and precarity." Poorer folks experience scarcity, harming mental AND physical health. Richer folks experience precarity, which harms mental health

Doing some shelf rearranging this morning and pulled @mcsweeneys editor @crmonks's "The Ultimate Game Guide to Your Life" down and started, then couldn't stop reading it. It's a brilliant piece of satire, but also a deeply moving human story. amazon.com/Ultimate-Game-…
I'm biased because I acquired and edited the book for my short-lived humor imprint (TOW Books), but even at the time, I thought Chris' book was too good for the list and the genre. It honestly moved me to tears at the end. If you can find a physical copy, it's so worth your time.
Now I'm on to the other TOW Books books. @jasonroeder's "Oh, the Humanity!: A Gentle Guide to Social Interaction for the Feeble Young Introvert" is another really funny book that simultaneously offers some deep pathos.amazon.com/OH-HUMANITY-Ge…

2. When I entered seminary, I was a bit older than everyone else. I was 34 when everyone else was 24-27. But I was full of joy starting my new life. To study and learn a lot, plus I am an extrovert and I love meeting new people. Never had I imagined what I was about to experience
3. All started well. I met many new guys with whom I was going to share 7 years. My new 100 roommates. Nothing gives an extrovert more energy, but after a few months, I felt the loneliest person in the world. I was alone & I couldn’t understand why, but it was happening.

(ESSAY) I wrote PROOF OF COLLUSION because the complexity of the Trump-Russia case makes conventional reporting *alone* insufficient. Rather, such reporting—even if done well—benefits from the aid of "curatorial journalism." I wrote an essay on that here: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
PS/ If you know anything about freelancing, you know I *didn't write the headline* to that essay in THE GUARDIAN. In my view the headline *deliberately* inverts the argument of the essay (that conventional reporting and curatorial journalism must work hand in hand) to get clicks.
PS2/ *I'd* say "Trump-Russia is too complex [to report no differently than we do any other story]. We need a new kind of journalism [to assist conventional reporting]." That's unwieldy, so I'll say that the headline I asked for was, "The Trump-Russia Case Cries Out for Curators."

Here are a few thoughts. Thread.

1) set your phone timer for five minutes. Spend them watching your breath move in and out of your body. When your mind wanders away, bring it gently & lovingly back. Build up to 20 mins a day.
Take one activity you do each day (walking your dog, doing the dishes, whatever) and try to be fully present—not lost in a reverie or the tangles of your head, pay attention fully. Feel the warm soapy water on your hands. Notice the ache in your feet. Watch the light glinting.
Pray. That looks different based on your faith tradition (or no tradition) but the essence of it is about offering your heart up to the great transcendent beyond. (Or God, the divine, whatever language you prefer.) It’s a pouring out, of sorts.

Okay, I saw this this morning and tried to ignore it, but this has been bothering me all day so I’m going to say a thing. I realize that the term “video essay” has become oversaturated, but I feel like people are forgetting what an “essay” is supposed to be.
The basic thrust of this video’s argument is that video essays are too “authoritative” sounding, and are instead really opinion pieces, not "essays." AV Club even backs this up, which is surprising to me. Like, an essay isn’t a book report, guys.
I do agree that there are plenty of video essays that aren’t really “essays” - my most recent was more documentary, and there are several of mine (RENT and Hercules come to mind) that I wish I could redo because I put a bunch of stuff in there that wasn’t relevant to the thesis.

1. THE BIG DEAL IS A BIG DEAL. The budget deal was ultimately a pretty standard example of How Big Things Happen in Congress Right Now: after much yelling and some conservative show-votes, a centrist cross-party coalition passed a Senate-cut deal as the clock was expiring.
Make no mistake: this is a *huge* bill. A massive increase in defense and non-defense spending caps. A ton of disaster relief. Tax Extenders. CHIP extension. God knows what else. This will be *the* bill of the 2nd session of the 115th. Nothing further will compare.
