A good rundown on the Gallup student poll research showing the importance of faculty mentoring, but the headline hits me funny. I think most faculty are aware of the ways they matter. insidehighered.com/views/2019/02/…
The barriers to better faculty mentoring are far more likely to be systemic than individual. As contingent faculty I could not effectively mentor students because I was never going to teach an upper-division course where I might see them a second time.
Or, adjunct faculty may simply not be around in future semester to be a mentor. Even now, when I haven't been teaching, students reach out to me and I try to help, but I can't do things like write recommendations because I lack status and institutional affiliation.
