GP Free employee tip: Don't show up in my office (or my email (or anyone's office or email)) saying something like, "Here's an issue I found" then stare blankly at me.
GP This infuriates me, and likely many employers and managers. You will have issues. There are plenty of things you don't know and shouldn't be expected to know. But, dammit, do better. Don't waste my time.
GP How about thinking through the issue you've spotted based on what you do know how to do? The issue likely wouldn't have hit your desk in the first instance if you didn't have *some* basic knowledge or ability to solve it.
GP Take some notes. Maybe do some basic research. Sometimes, that alone will solve your problem. Sometimes it won't. If it doesn't, come see me to discuss. But come prepared to discuss the issue.
GP I will spend hours with you if you can show me you've thought about the problem and come up with some proposed courses of action, even if they're spectacularly wrong proposals.
GP The most important thing to me is to show me (and yourself) respect by not wasting my time and making an effort to do your job.
GP If you still think it's a good idea to show up in my office unprepared in what appears to be a poorly considered attempt to get me to do your job for you, prepare for me to light you up with the fire of a thousand suns.
GP And if you really piss me off, I can be a vindictive son of a bitch. You do not want this. This will be detrimental to your existence in my company and likely shorten it as well.
GP But if you show effort and a willingness to learn, I will hold you and love you and call you George. The ability to think and communicate effectively is worth its weight in gold.
GP That's it for now. I guess.
