As #InternationalWomensDay is marked around the world, the fact that a single day is needed to draw attention to the condition of half of humanity acts as a stark reminder that modern ideologies that claim to liberate women, have in reality failed to do so.
The epidemic of sexual harassment highlighted by the MeToo movement, the rampant objectification & exploitation of women, & the socioeconomic deprivation so many suffer from continue to pose serious issues to modern, developed societies
Despite these immense civilisational challenges, more often than not, it is Muslim women who are thrust into the spotlight, cast as oppressed, backward & submissive, in need of urgent reform & liberation
Similarly, women in Muslim-majority countries struggle to secure their basic rights, often plagued by war, insecurity and political autocracy, or repressive cultures masquerading as religious norms.
As Muslim women, we are perfectly placed to dismantle these stereotypes & present the solutions Islam has for humanity. However instead, on the global stage, we have been relegated to explaining our identity, justifying our existence & proving our humanity
The Qarawiyyin Project invites Muslim women to work together to broaden this discourse & showcase Islam's relevance to all areas of the modern world. It seeks to empower Muslim women to participate in broader community conversations, beyond solely 'Women in Islam'
Our writers come from all over the world, to provide a space for us to learn about our mutual experiences, & find comfort & guidance in the Deen of Allah (swt). Although we are a female-led platform, these conversations are for men & women - the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
This IWD, lets go beyond the performative platitudes and celebrations of an abstract date on the calendar, and instead learn more about an Islamic framework that benefits not just women, but all of humanity
