At a Rhode Island legislative hearing yesterday, witnesses decried the lack of CPR instructions provided by call takers at the state’s 911 center. Meanwhile, the State Police superintendent pledged to review procedures and training of 911 call takers. propub.li/2UKfVDW

1/ If Trump starts building his border wall, he can invoke something called a Declaration of Taking. It's like eminent domain on steroids. A court grants title to the land to the federal government. Bulldozers can roll the next day.

All of this "Taking" has happened before: after Congress passed The Secure Fence Act of 2006, which called for 654 miles of fence along the southern border. So we looked into how that went:

Two officers with the Elkhart Police Department were charged with federal civil rights offenses for using excessive force against a handcuffed arrestee.

This after we and @SBTribune demanded to see — then published — video of it. 1/
“A little overboard,” is how the police chief had previously described the officers’ actions. Then ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network demanded to see the video. 2/
The @SBTribune and ProPublica had been investigating criminal justice in Elkhart County, looking at police accountability, among other issues.

This Day in Labor History: September 5, 1934. The North Carolina governor calls out the National Guard to crush the textile strike, part of the general repression of that critical movement. Let's talk about the impact of this incredibly important moment on our history.
When the New Deal began, the Roosevelt administration pushed for the National Industrial Recovery Act. The NIRA was intended to eliminate the cutthroat competition that destroyed profits in many industries of this time, including textiles.
Many large manufacturers supported it, hoping it would drive out low-end competition and consolidate industries. But the NIRA also included a half-thought out provision called Section 7(a) that granted workers the right to form a union free from employer interference.

BOSTON – A former New England La Cosa Nostra (NELCN) caporegime was sentenced today in federal court in Boston for obstructing a federal investigation into the murder of a Boston nightclub owner in the 1990s.
Robert P. DeLuca, 72, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper to 66 months in prison and three years of supervised release. In November 2016, DeLuca pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of justice and two counts of making false statements.

Indianapolis-United States Attorney Josh Minkler announced today that the former Fire Chief of Ingalls, Indiana has been charged with sexual exploitation of a child.
Brian Cushman, 29, Ingalls, had his initial appearance in federal court last week and was released on GPS monitoring today.

“This office will not tolerate the sexual abuse of our children by those who are supposed to lead our children from positions of trust,” said Minkler.
