March 22 letter from province to city reiterates their desire to revert to three-stop subway plan, but also they want to look at burying the Eglinton West LRT. toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2… (PDF)
This language re: the relief line is bizarre. Province wants it to be a “free-standing project, which would enable the procurement of a truly unique transit artery spanning the city that is not beholden to the requirements of the technologically-outdated Line 2.” Uh, little help?
Do they want it to be a monorail?
March 22 letter also says the city’s cost estimates for the Scarborough subway and the relief line may have doubled: is the one-stop subway now projected to cost more than $6 billion?!
“The province has proven expertise and expertise and capabilities when it comes to building transit infrastructure.” Some examples would be appreciated.
Second letter from province to city dated March 26 also has some weird elements. A three-stop Scarborough subway extending northwards from Scarborough Centre? Still talk of “different technology” for the relief line? toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2… (PDF)
These two letters confirm some of the more dire concerns laid out by opponents of Doug Ford’s subway upload: real indications that the provincial government intends to ignore evidence, tear up existing transit plans and impose their own.
