Been a while since I watched a House of Lords debate. Forgot that one of its chief pleasures - there are many - is wondering which of their names you'd want for yourself.

This is a bit discombobulating. Usually the Lords is super chill, but the Brexit infection has contaminated them. They've become quite excitable.
Michael Howard hasn't improved, I see.
Watching the Lords is like the Commons but everything is a little bit different. It's like Earth 2 in DC Comics or Europe in Pulp Fiction.

If these people gave a good goddamn about treating everyone equally, they would fight to expand free movement, not eradicate it.

In news that will surprise no-one it sounds like the talks with Labour have completely broken down.
Labour spokesperson: "We are disappointed that the govt has not offered real change or compromise. We urge the PM to come forward with genuine changes to her deal in an effort to find an alternative that can win support in parliament and bring the country together."
I would have been shocked if May offered a meaningful compromise in those talks. And even more shocked if Labour accepted it even if she had.

I watched the House of Lords debate on the demand for an apology for the Amritsar Massacre last night, 19/02/2019, so that you don’t have to. It made for pretty depressing, and entirely predictable, viewing.

In 1920, the House of Lords famously came out in support of Dyer, even as his actions were denounced by the then Government and the House of Commons. The debate yesterday was accordingly not without historical resonance. 2/
The most galling aspect of the House of Lords debate on the Amritsar Massacre, was the manner in which it served simply to perpetuate a narrative of the Empire and Britain as a force for good in the world. 3/

The trial was about a year long. According to the article the theory behind the programme (based on CKLA) is “The theory is that if children understand the words they read, they can understand the text.” - of course criticism has been on *what text*, relevant if donain-specific.
Nevertheless, IMO it makes sense to at least also, certainly after 69 45 minute lessons on history and geography, measure reading comprehension with standardised tests. I do agree though that a bespoke test would also make sense. This didn’t have one,the EEF report said ‘invalid’

A key feature of the Lords #EUWithdrawalBill report is the number of places in which it states that the Bill, as drafted, is "constitutionally unacceptable" or "not constitutionally necessary or appropriate". That may be the most important aspect for non-lawyers to understand.
