Tuesday afternoon on Senate floor, @SenDougJones has organized the reading of MLK’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” by him & Sens. @LamarAlexander @tedcruz @KamalaHarris @timkaine & @lisamurkowski. April is anniversary of the B’ham marches and the writing of the letter in ‘63.

At this hour, the status of DHS Secy Nielsen is unclear. A senior admin. official tells me that she had a 5 PM meeting at the WH with POTUS where she was planning to discuss with him the immigration and border issues and a path forward — she had no intention of resigning...
2/ ...according to the source, but rather was going there with an agenda.

But the source said, it is believed within the administration that President Trump will be pushing for personnel changes and there are others afoot beyond the ICE director nominee who was pulled Friday...
3/ The source notes President Trump‘s frustration with the current asylum laws, and his desire for individuals who work for the administration to block central American asylum seekers from entering the United States —- contrary to the laws on the books that allow their entry.

There's a real divide among government officials about whether the border fence the president is visiting today is what it says on the plaque bolted to it: the "first section of President Trump's border wall."

Here's what I've learned. 1/
2/ Yes, this replacement fence was planned by the US gov dating back to 2009. All of these barriers have been planned in some way. shape or form for at least a decade. But Trump is the one who pushed for funding and made it a priority, thus the funding was allocated in 2017...
3/ ...and with the design that the President approved. CBP officials give Trump credit for making the funding a priority to the degree previous presidents did not.

That said, it's not being paid for by Mexico,..

The assistant chief patrol agent for Border Patrol's El Centro Sector “told the Desert Sun in February 2018 — as the project was starting — that the Border Patrol had identified this section as a priority for replacement in 2009, during President Obama's administration.”

Recently, I have seen a lot of calls from moderates who will never face racism call for peaceful dialogue to deal with the current climate of heightened tensions under Trump. On this #MLKDay i remind them of the letter from clergy that prompted MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail
It is that letter from well meaning folks who sympathized with MLK Jr's goals that prompted HIS Letter from a Birmingham Jail. One likes to think of one's self as well-meaning. But a negative peace is only peaceful for those of you who will never suffer racial oppression.

Let's do a thread because I've wanted to address this for a while now.

On civil rights, today's "centrist liberals" are too often the same as the 60s "white moderates" that MLK talked about.
One of my favorite pieces of 60s civil rights era writing is MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail. I try to read it each year. It's a great reminder of effective protest tactics and soft allies.

In the letter MLK gives his justification for "direct action", which in modern English is disruptive protests.

The disruption is the point. The anger "on the other side" is the point. Their discomfort is the point.

Recent events provide a great illustration that, while it is a social norm in polite society to support nonviolent protest, in the face of actual nonviolent protests, most political and social elites really want no protest at all.
When people imagine nonviolent protest, elite only think of hopefully ineffective strategies like scheduled, fully permitted marches or rallies. Or strongly but politely worded opinion columns.
Actual effective nonviolent protests involve making life more difficult/uncomfortable/embarrassing for the targets of the protest. That's why it sometimes works.
