The narrative that Buttigieg is gratuitously criticizing Pence to provoke a feud is a side effect of our collective decision to memory hole the marriage equality debate. Pence spent years trying to strip people like Buttigieg of their civil rights. The criticisms are warranted.
The fact that Pence has not used an anti-gay slur against Buttigieg does not mean the mayor has no valid reason to criticize the VP. Pence fought tooth and nail to keep Buttigieg’s marriage illegal. His anti-gay campaign was the height of cruelty. time.com/4576513/mike-p…
The (straight) journalists buying into this narrative of a one-sided “feud,” of Buttigieg “baiting” Pence, have the luxury of forgetting that Pence used every ounce of his political and legal power to stop people like Buttigieg from getting married.

When a politician devotes his career to an assault on civil rights, he does not a pass because he is polite about it in public. I’m sure Pence was civil to Buttigieg in person. He was nothing short of sadistic in his relentless crusade to deny Buttigieg the right to marry.
