Hitler called The Munich Post - the last publishers & journalists reporting on Nazi crimes, death squads & political murders pre-World War II - "The Poison Kitchen". They were shut down, arrested & killed. Their silencing foreshadowed genocide

86 years later, a publisher reporting on war crimes has been abjectly censored, arbitrarily detained, tortured and it may yet cost his life. His persecutors want to destroy his publishing operation.

Scary that humanity hasn't progressed - even scarier to wonder what is next?
How many times have we heard/asked "Why did the German people tolerate/participate in the Nazi regime?"

The answer is simple: Before the genocide started, the government had achieved total information control. By getting rid of the last journalists who reported on their crimes.

Are you able to arrange for me to submit a right of reply? If not, who at @nzherald should I be speaking to? Such an egregious act as an NZ Herald contributor attacking a multi-awarded journalist & publisher who has been twice vindicated by the United Nations deserves a response.

This is a great idea. Unfortunately internet security is unobtainable for 99% of people. We can take basic steps to improve our practices but we can't protect ourselves from the nation state actors that oppose us. That said... 1/2

...many people in the position of being a target are so used to having no privacy/their privacy violated, that to simply not be isolated, even in a non-secure tech environment, would be a huge improvement for them. So yes somehow we need to create a welcoming atmosphere for them

Thread: I'm going to explain what it was that had me so frustrated on Feb 28. It's taken me 20 days (& 7 years) to fully form my thoughts on the topic. I am both seeing it, and living it. My best attempt to describe it will now follow.

Every single day I am contacted by people around the world who are in precarious situations - people to whom few will listen and even fewer will offer any meaningful support. Whistleblowers in various stages of litigation; or who are wanting to litigate; targets of intel agencies
They think because I am a journalist and because I have a public profile, that I will be able to help to get them justice, or to inform people, or to protect them, or to comfort them. Whistleblowers and intel agency targets desperately need that comfort, support and assistance.

When I teach on it, I always put up this figure, & it bugs me every time. It shows attentive liberals & conservatives polarized on Vietnam in 1970 once Rep & Dem leaders took distinct positions on the war. Party leaders weren't divided in 1964, which is why no public gap then. 2/
