I am very happy to announce the release of a paper co-written with @donaldcclarke who deserves the lion share of credit for producing such a sharp well written paper answering a major question: who owns Huawei. Short thread 1/n papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
Despite regular insistence by Huawei internationally it is employee owned, employees clearly do not own Huawei and Huawei in fact within China is on legal record as arguing that employees do not own Huawei. 2/n
Arguably just as importantly, based upon the ownership documentation of shell companies, the owner of Huawei is effectively state owned under what is called a mass organization similar in legal status to something like the Communist Youth League. 3/n
What is important to note, if you read the paper is that this can all be documented with corporate registrations and is not speculative. Anyway, I would encourage you to read the paper as we can quite conclusively show that Huawei is not employee owned. HT to @donaldcclarke

1. You are not a senior academic of any kind anywhere in China unless you are a good, loyal, and eager executioner for the CCP. Period. Full. Stop. No exceptions. Many are Party members. At the very least they will demonstrate the most administrative eagerness to match 2/n
What the university is doing with Party objectives. There are no exceptions to this rule in modern China. 2. The face senior academics and scholars have inside and outside China are frequently two poles apart. I know of one Chinese scholar quoted in international media 3/n

A short thread discussing Chinese universities in light of US admissions news. 1) For all the varieties of corruption and scheming, Chinese are probably the closest thing in China you will find to absolute merit based (I'll get in to the inequities later). It is basically 1/n
one high stakes test. Period. There are some bonus points you can get but they are pretty limited and being cracked down on. What you score on the test determines what choice of schools you have. 2) I can honestly say I believe any corruption or gaming of the system is pretty 2/n
limited. Students and administrators might complain about someone or province cheating, but most everyone took pride that the gaokao and admission was based on merit with no corruption and I never saw or heard anything about this that indicated otherwise to me 3/n

One of the many places there is lack of perspective is what is the purpose of the tariffs? Trump people entered this fight expecting to be one term president. Why does that matter? WTO litigation, if you win after many years only gives you the ability to levy tariffs 1/n
Which you then negotiate with the offending country. China has been known to drag these things out into infinity. Despite Beijing and DC think tank claims China abides by its agreements, everyone not buying CCP propaganda knows they don't. Let's ask Mastercard how their 2/n
WTO agreement to enter China in 2000 and litigation win in 2011 is going. Throw in the Democratic shoulder shrug on China, and the Trump people went fast tariff to focus the mind and set the clock. Make no mistake at all, there are significant risks to the strategy 3/n

Very happy to announce that the preprint for our object concept and object image database is now online! We systematically sampled a set of 1854 object concepts & identified 26107 high-quality images of them (>=12 examples per object), all freely available for academic purposes!
The database comes with a list of 27 empirically-determined high-level categories, metadata such as Wordnet ID or word frequency, word sense embeddings, similarity matrices from activations in the DNN CORnet (by @qbilius) for all images, ...
Until we have a final solution for permanent storage of the database, please contact us for access! It was a lot of work and a great team effort, so we hope the database to be useful!

First, a word about methodology. Using some new techniques for spatial inference (which we'll be publishing in a data science journal), my team has produced what I think is the most rigorous, accurate, comprehensive spatial analysis of short-term rentals to date.
